Ruby Free Interview on The Time Machine

Singer-songwriter Rick Hromadka and vocalist Lisa Cavaliere from the duo Ruby Free were guests on The Time Machine to discuss the duo's debut album "Introducing Ruby Free". Rick, as the driving force and frontman to both Los Angeles veteran rock bands Maple Mars and Double Naught Spies, has been a guest on the broadcast a number of times over the years but this time around, he is joined by Lisa. Ruby Free's own website bio explains it best, "Somewhere, deep in the valley, just northwest of Los Angeles, lives a family. Together they grow tomatoes, grapes, and very large lemons. They have visitors from time to time like raccoons, snakes, coyotes, and possums. They also have a little husband and wife band called Ruby Free." In addition to Rick's talents, Lisa is an ex-choir girl, whose unique vocal stylings bring to mind Suzanna Hoffs." Their debut album is a delicious blend of Paul and Linda McCartney melodies and sunny "Laurel Cyn" harmonies, producing a familiar yet new distinctive sound. The upbeat theme of the album captures a band not taking itself too seriously and living in the moment. A three time Emmy Award winning sound editor and mixer, singer/songwriter/producer Rick Hromadka took a lo-fi approach to the production, and the songs echo tones of 1970's radio. Pulling back on "the gloss" was key! Lisa Cavaliere, who comes from a family of singers, adds a delicate female perspective to songs like "Bongos And Beards", "Deep In Valley" and "Three Cheers For The Sun God". Her lead vocal on the infectious "Tiny Stars" hallmarks her range and has remained in rotation on The Time Machine's playlist since the album's release.

Rick Hromadka's last album "Galaxyland" (Maple Mars) drew quotes like, "Album of the year" - Bill Kopp (Musosribe), "A psychedelic masterpiece" - Mike Lidskin (Twirl Radio), "Somewhere between Brian Wilson's Smile and Big Star" - Robert Kinsler (Orange County Times) and ranked as one of the top three most played albums on the air for the year of 2010 on The Time Machine. Critics were anticipating the mid summer release of "Introducing Ruby Free" and the warm fuzzy sound will have you singing along soon!

New music was also featured from The Mockers with their topical tune "Republican Girl", Susanna Hoffs, Mike Viola, Schuyler Fisk and The Beach Boys. Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include; Maple Mars, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Smith Bros., Rachael Yamagata, Crystal Gayle, Helen Reddy, Jared & The Long Road To Love, Paul & Linda McCartney, Lou Christie and Shaun Cassidy.

Tim Feehan and Paul Bertolino Interviews On The Time Machine

Producer and singer-songwriter Tim Feehan was as a guest on The Time Machine. Tim was a founding member of the band Footloose back in the late seventies which resulted in a local radio smash hit here in Hawaii titled "Leaving Tomorrow For Maui" that also gained significant radio airplay in Canada. Tim branched out on a solo career in the mid-eighties and has worked with some of the music industry’s biggest names including; Brian McKnight, Bone Thugs N Harmony, David Foster, Chicago, and Boyz II Men. Over a decade ago, Tim co-wrote and produced the critically acclaimed “The Color Of Silence” for quadruple platinum selling pop star Tiffany. The album remained in heavy rotation for nearly a decade on The Time Machine playlists. Tim has also penned songs for such diverse artists as Krayzie Bone, Eddie Money and Kina. In addition to sharing the stories behind his Footloose days, Tim also shared a world broadcast debut of "Smile" from Cadence Burns.

Tim’s first foray into the Los Angeles music scene came when he was asked to sing alongside Whitney Houston for Nancy Reagan’s anti-drug video “Stop The Madness”. The video also starred many of Hollywood’s biggest 80′s heavyweights including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Herb Alpert and The New Edition.

In 1986 he entered a songwriting contest sponsored by the legendary producer David Foster (Celine Dion, Whitney Houston) taking first place and signed with Scotti Bros/CBS in Los Angeles, where he relocated later that year. The self-titled "Tim Feehan" debut was released in 1987 and gained five A.R.I.A. (Alberta Recording Industry Association) awards including “Best Pop Performance” and “Producer of the year”. The first single “Where’s The Fire” was chosen as the theme song for Charlie Sheen’s motion picture debut and cult favorite “The Wraith”. 1987 also saw Tim win a Canadian Academy Of Arts & Sciences JUNO award for “Most Promising Male Vocalist”.

In the late eighties Tim signed with MCA records and released “Full Contact” featuring collaborations with producer Brian “TOO LOUD” Macleod (Chilliwack, Headpins) and songwriters Bruce Gaitsch (Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita”), Gene Black (Heart’s “Never”) and Marc Jordan (Rod Stewart´s “Rhythm Of My Heart”). Musicians included American Idol judge Randy Jackson (JOURNEY), Steve Lukather (TOTO) and Richard Marx. During the down time, Tim sang and produced “Dirty Love” which appeared in the James Bond film “License To Kill” and performed on both the “Arthur 2″ theme song and Dionne Warwick’s gold album “Reservations For Two”. It was during this time that Tim, with co-writer Macleod, scored a cut on the legendary band Chicago’s million selling album “19″, while also providing background vocals for the project.

Meanwhile, Tim’s growing studio experience earned him a reputation as a first call session singer and he began working for dozens of legendary artists and producers, most notably Burt Bacharach.

In the early nineties Tim was involved in numerous projects including a stint as lead singer in David Foster’s all-star world tour featuring Lee Ritenour (guitar), Nathan East (bass) and Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). In 1996 Tim returned with the album “Pray For Rain” aimed at his growing fan base in Europe.

Since the mid 90′s, Tim and former manager Brad Schmidt owned and operated L.A.’s legendary BACKROOM RECORDING STUDIOS, home to such artists as Justin Timberlake, DJ Battlecat and superstar producer ‘Tricky’ Stewart.

No stranger to TV and Film, Tim has had dozens of his songs appear on hit TV shows including “Desperate Housewives”, “Brothers and Sisters”, “My Name Is Earl”, “Parenthood”, “The Good Wife” “Melrose Place”, “Bones”, “Raising Hope”, “Cougartown”, “The Big Bang Theory” and many others.

    The Time Machine

Rocker and singer-songwriter Paul Bertolino was also a guest on The Time Machine. Writer Paul Koehler wrote that Paul "draws from a well that incorporates the toughest 60s jangle-rock, the softest 70's a.m. gold, and maybe even a pinch of Radio Shack synth swagger. Almost in spite of that it's laid back, California songwriting so solid and proprietary that it refuses to be picked apart into it's base elements...try as you might. This is the stuff that will make up the Nuggets Boxes of the future, so why wait? Come feel the love." Paul shared with the radio audience how he came to record the Roger Nichols & Paul Williams 1969 musical gem "The Drifter" that received heavy airplay on The Time Machine in 2011.

Other new music featured on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include songs from Susanna Hoffs and Cadence Burns. Rounding out the broadcast are songs from The Smith Bros., Wings, Footloose and Tiffany.
